COEX & Starfield Library

Why go

Starfield Library is a two-story open reading space set right in the middle of Starfield COEX Mall, one of Asia’s largest underground shopping malls. It’s free, it’s indoors, and it connects straight to the subway, so it slots into almost any day in Gangnam. Come for the photo, stay for an hour of browsing, then let the mall handle lunch, shopping, and a rainy afternoon.

What to see

The tall bookshelves

The library’s signature view is its towering shelves rising over the open central floor, and it’s one of the most photographed indoor spots in Seoul. Weekday mornings before noon give you the best chance of a shot without crowds. Late-afternoon light through the skylight is the most flattering for photos.

Browsing and a short sit-down

Entry is free, and you’re welcome to walk in and browse without a ticket. Seating is limited and fills quickly, so treat it as a place to wander and look rather than somewhere to settle in for a long read.

COEX Mall around it

The library sits at the mall’s Central Plaza on the B1 level, surrounded by cafes, fashion and cosmetics stores, and a food court. COEX Aquarium is in the same mall and makes an easy add-on (separate paid ticket). Bongeunsa Temple is just outside if you want a quiet contrast after the mall.

Weekend trippers

• Arrive on a weekday before noon for the clearest shot of the shelves; by afternoon the ground floor fills with people taking the same photo.
• Plan it as a 30–60 minute stop and pair it with a cafe in the mall rather than building a whole morning around it.

Shoppers & foodies

• Cosmetics and fashion stores are a short walk from the library, so you can shop without going back outside.
• The mall stays open until 22:00, which makes this a good after-dinner stop if you’re eating in Gangnam.

First-timers & explorers

• It’s a low-effort, free option for a rainy day or a gap between plans if you’re staying in Gangnam or Samseong.
• COEX is a major convention district, and English signage throughout the mall is good.

Families of 4+

• Fully stroller-friendly, air-conditioned, and free: a reliable fallback when the weather turns.
• Combine the library with COEX Aquarium for a half-day plan without leaving the building.

Good for families

The library and the whole of COEX Mall are indoors, flat, and served by elevators and escalators, so you can get from the subway to the bookshelves with a stroller without meeting stairs.

Kids usually enjoy the height of the shelves for about as long as it takes to take a photo. There’s little seating in the library and it isn’t set up for children to play, so younger kids will get more out of COEX Aquarium or the mall’s play areas.

Restrooms are spread throughout the mall, including family and accessible restrooms near the food courts. There’s a nursing room in COEX Mall, but its location depends on the wing, so ask at an information desk or check the mall directory when you arrive.

For a family of four or more, the library itself won’t seat you together. Head to the mall food court for a meal or a break; it has large-group seating.

Getting there

Take Line 2 to Samseong Station and use Exit 5 or 6, which connect directly to the mall through Millennium Plaza. From Line 9, Bongeunsa Station Exit 7 connects through ASEM Plaza. Either way you can reach the library underground, which helps in summer heat and winter cold.

The address is B1F COEX Mall, 513 Yeongdong-daero, Gangnam-gu. If you’re taking a taxi, show the driver the Korean name, 코엑스 별마당도서관.

Pair it with: a morning at the library and mall, then Line 2 a few stops east to Jamsil for Lotte World Tower & Lotte World in the afternoon and Seoul Sky around sunset.

Eat nearby

COEX Mall’s food court and restaurants cover quick meals for every age, and they’re the easiest option with kids or a big group. For something more Korean, save dinner for one of these:

• Korean BBQ: tableside grilling, a good sit-down dinner after a day in Gangnam.
• Convenience stores: cheap snacks and drinks for the subway ride onward.
